Our 18-year-old hot water system failed unexpectedly just before we went overseas. Even though it was late at night, Sam responded straight away, talked me through what to check, and arranged to come out the very next morning.

Gas units additionally need adequate ventilation and correct flue arrangements, and those requirements differ between indoor and outdoor installations. Heat pumps need airflow and generate noise, which affects where they can reasonably sit relative to windows and neighbouring properties.

Every storage system also needs somewhere for its relief valve to discharge safely. That discharge has to go where hot water leaving under pressure will not scald anyone or damage anything, and where it is visible enough that a fault is noticed.

Changing from one type to another is where the constraints bite. A like for like replacement in an existing position is usually straightforward. Changing fuel source, moving the unit, or switching to a heat pump can bring in new pipework, electrical or gas work, and different clearance requirements.

Working this out before ordering a unit avoids discovering it on installation day.

If a hot water system is leaking, making unusual noises, or delivering water hot enough to scald, switch it off at the isolation point if you can do so safely and call a licensed plumber.
