They were punctual and did a very professional job. Anything they dug up, they filled. They left the work area cleaner than they found it. I ended up getting 4 quotes and they had the best price. Our 18-year-old hot water system failed unexpectedly just before we went overseas. Even though it was late at night, Sam responded straight away, talked me through what to check, and arranged to come out the very next morning.

He quickly diagnosed the issue, clearly explained why the old unit wasn't worth repairing, and recommended a Thermann continuous flow system. Why it takes so long for hot water to arrive

Waiting at a tap for hot water to appear is a common complaint, and it is usually not a fault with the hot water system at all.

What comes out first is the water already sitting in the pipe between the unit and the tap, which has cooled since it was last used. The further the outlet is from the hot water system, the more cooled water there is to clear before hot water arrives. That volume goes down the drain every time.

Uninsulated pipework makes it worse, because water in a bare pipe loses heat faster. Lagging, which is the insulation fitted around hot water pipes, slows that loss. It does not make hot water travel faster, but it keeps the water in the line warmer for longer between uses, which shortens the wait when the pipe has been idle for a while.

Pipe run length is the other factor, and it is set at installation. A hot water unit positioned a long way from the bathroom will always have a delay, which is worth considering if a unit is being relocated or replaced anyway.

If a hot water system is leaking, making unusual noises, or delivering water hot enough to scald, switch it off at the isolation point if you can do so safely and call a licensed plumber. Tempering valves and pressure relief valves are not do it yourself items, and a failed relief valve can be dangerous.

What information helps when I call?

Will I know the cost before work starts?

Why do I wait so long for hot water at one tap but not another?

Distance. The tap with the delay has more pipe between it and the hot water system, so there is more cooled water sitting in the line to clear before hot water arrives. It is a function of the pipe run rather than a fault.

Does insulating hot water pipes actually help?

It slows the rate at which water in the pipe cools between uses, so if a tap is used periodically through the day the wait is shorter. It does not speed up delivery from cold, because the volume of water in the pipe still has to clear.

Should I move my hot water unit closer to the bathroom?

It can reduce the delay, but relocating a unit involves new pipework and possibly gas or electrical work, so it is usually only worth considering when a unit is being replaced anyway. We would set out what the move actually involves before you decide.
