Our apartment building is only a few years old. Why do we already have leaks?

Fibro from that period can contain asbestos, so we never cut or drill it on impulse; we plan pipe routes through safer access, and on the rare job where fibro must be disturbed, licensed removalists deal with that sheet before we continue. The process is routine for houses of this age and should never be a reason to leave a leak unfixed.
The bathroom is original and we are finally renovating. What should happen behind the walls?
Everything, ideally. While the room is stripped, replacing the galvanised branches and old valves costs a fraction of what the same work costs behind finished tiling, and it protects the renovation you are paying for. We coordinate with your builder or tiler on the rough-in, pressure-test before the walls close, and make sure the new bathroom is not running on sixty-year-old plumbing.
Do you install child-safe hot water controls?
Yes. A tempering valve caps the hot water reaching bathrooms at a safe temperature and is standard on every system we install or replace. Plenty of Lane Cove North's older homes, and some hastily fitted apartments, either lack one or have a valve that has drifted with age; both take minutes for us to test. If you have young children, no other piece of safety plumbing gives you more protection for so little cost.
