Flashings seal the joins where the roof meets something else: a wall, a chimney, a vent, a skylight. Those junctions move with temperature and settle over time, and when a flashing lifts or corrodes the water finds it immediately.
Valleys where two roof planes meet carry a large volume of water and are a common point of failure when debris accumulates. Because water travels along the underside of materials before it drops, the wet patch inside is often nowhere near the actual entry point, which is why tracing a roof leak is a specific skill rather than a guess.
